Health Resource Center

Often high school students in the Chester Upland School District need guidance on healthy relationships, preventing an unwanted pregnancy, avoiding risky sexual behaviors, or understanding their sexual identity. The Foundation for Delaware County’s Health Resource Center, located at Chester High School, gives them a safe place to go to get answers.

The Center is a confidential in-school drop-in center where any Delaware County youth up to age 24 can receive information on critical topics, such as:

  • Pregnancy prevention methods
  • Condom confidence and distribution
  • Risk reduction
  • Family planning
  • Gender and sexual identity
  • Sexual consent

The Center is led by Alanah Pierce, a health educator with a bachelor’s degree, who makes referrals as needed to both in-school social services and community-based providers specializing in adolescent health services. Access Matters, a Philadelphia nonprofit, provides equal access to anyone with reproductive and sexual health service needs. The nonprofit funds the program in partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Though gaps in birth rates among white, Black, and Hispanic teens in the U.S. have narrowed significantly in the past 20 years, we remain committed to the overall health and well-being of young people in Delaware County, empowering them to make responsible choices to stay safe and healthy. This year, it is expected that the Health Resource Center will provide more than 300 counseling sessions. The center refers more than 60 percent of students to family planning and adolescent-focused primary care health services.
