Where are you from?
I was born and raised in the city of Chester. I’ve lived in Delaware County my entire life, except for when I was at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania.
How long have you been on The Foundation board?
I was invited to join the Board in 2019.
What inspired you to join The Foundation board?
I have been working in the community for a very long time and had knowledge of the WIC Program, the Nurse Family Partnership Program, and the Healthy Start program. These programs are very important in the community and have an excellent reputation. I also have worked with several non-profit organizations receiving grants from the Foundation and know how much it has enabled them to have greater impact in our community.
What should people know about The Foundation?
The Foundation genuinely cares for the people of Delaware County. We work tirelessly to bring resources to the County to enhance the quality of life for our residents. We seek and encourage philanthropy from donors to support our non-profit organizations, our legacy programs and celebrate the diversity that is Delaware County. The Foundation supports and requires diversity and equity in all of our programs and business dealings.
What was your first experience volunteering?
My first volunteer experience occurred in elementary school. There was a need to fill a crossing safety post near my school. No one wanted to take the post. I volunteered to do it. That was the very beginning of my life of service over 60 years ago!
What causes are you passionate about?
My most passionate cause is the empowerment of people and grooming our youth to be compassionate and informed leaders. The youth are our future, and it is our duty to provide the resources and inspiration to enable them to thrive and be assets to our communities and society. The empowerment of people is necessary so that individuals understand they have control over their own lives. We can all craft our own solutions to the issues affecting us and not wait for someone else to do it for us. We can all be part of the solution and not part of the problem.
What do you love most about Delco?
I love the diverse geography of Delaware County. I know that’s a strange thing to say, but it also reflects the diversity of the people who live here. There’s something for everyone, rolling hills, green grass, urban living, wonderful waterways, historic sights, and a variety of cultures. The County also reflects the issues we must address regarding inequities and the need to improve resources and the quality of life for our underserved communities.
What is your favorite Delco spot?
I feel so peaceful at the Chester waterfront at Subaru Park soccer stadium. The beauty of the Delaware River runs through sudden Delaware County and beauty in Chester, Tinicum, Essington and other locations is breathtaking!
