The staff members of The Foundation for Delaware County’s Women’s and Children’s Programs are experts in educating families throughout our area about the importance of safe sleep practices in preventing infant deaths in the first months of life.
Cribs for Kids® is a safe-sleep education program specifically for low-income moms. Women and Children’s Programs became a Cribs for Kids partner in 2006. For the last 12 years they have been educating families about how to keep their infants safe. In addition, they have provided safe cribs to those most in need in Delaware County. When the foundation inherited the Women’s and Children’s Programs in 2016, we joined in supporting this project.
Many deaths that previously would have been classified as Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS, or an unexplained death before 1 year old), are now attributed to other sleep-related causes. While there has been a major decrease in the incidence of SIDS since 1992 due to educational campaigns at the national, state and local levels, preventable deaths are still occurring in Delaware County. The majority of funding to support the Delaware County Cribs for Kids program is provided by the Cruz family, in memory of David Angelo Cruz.
