In our increasingly digital and densely populated world, studies show that both adults and children are losing their connection with nature. Tyler Arboretum in Media is on a mission to change that. Tyler is a 650-acre public garden and arboretum providing a natural haven for families, nature enthusiasts, and community members seeking respite and connection to the outdoors. Tyler not only conserves historic landscapes, but also protects and improves the environment, and connects visitors with the natural world. The arboretum boasts seventeen miles of hiking trails, showcasing vast meadows and protected forests. They maintain vegetable, pollinator, and fragrant gardens, and dozens of guided programs throughout the year, reconnecting the community to nature. In such a densely populated county, this special spot of protected land uniquely serves both people and wild animals.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Tyler hosts over 40,000 visitors annually, including thousands of local schoolchildren. Each year, they provide 100+ educational programs, including a weekly bird-watching group, trail hikes, and wildflower walks. Their programs include gardening, natural science education, and family wellness. Education programs focus on teaching the “why”: why conservation matters, why growing your own food matters, and why fostering a deeper connection with nature improves well-being.
History
Tyler is one of the oldest and largest arboretums in the Northeastern United States. The arboretum is located on the traditional homeland of the Lenape people, and the property was established through a 1681 land grant from William Penn and remained in the same family for eight generations before becoming an arboretum in 1944.
New Projects
The arboretum is always growing and expanding programing. One of the newest initiatives is the thriving edible garden, established in 2019, which grows and donates over 2000 pounds of fresh produce annually to local food banks. Returning this year are field trips and summer camps, which connect children to nature, foster environmental stewardship, and inspire curiosity about the world around them. Programming also features events like winter pancake breakfasts, seasonal fireside events, family-friendly nature walks, and conservation projects. Tyler is also proud to preserve historic tree collections, including the Painter Ginkgo, Giant Sequoia, and expansive lilac, magnolia, and witch hazel collections.
Delco Gives
In 2024, Tyler participated in the inaugural Delco Gives, providing a powerful platform for Tyler to share their mission and raise awareness for our work in the community. The event helped them raise funds for field trips, pollinator-supporting gardens, and the revitalization of natural areas. They connected with new donors and audiences engaged in the generous spirit of Delaware County!
Tyler provides happiness and improved well-being for so many in Delaware County. It is a place for families to connect, a space for children to explore, and a place for volunteers to contribute to conservation work.
