Nonprofit Spotlight: Kids Smiles

Kids Smiles is on a mission to ensure that every child has access to quality dental care. Operating three dental centers in Philadelphia, Kids Smiles provides comprehensive care to more than 19,000 children each year, and their reach extends well beyond the city, including throughout Delaware County.

Thanks to strong community partnerships and proactive outreach programming, Kids Smiles serves children from across Southeastern Pennsylvania, including many families in Delaware County. Geography is never a barrier: children come from as far as Lancaster County to receive care. The only requirement? Patients must be 18 or younger.

Removing Barriers to Care

Kids Smiles centers are designed to be as inclusive and accessible as possible. 90% of their patients are insured through Medicaid, and for those who are uninsured, the team helps families navigate the system to enroll in coverage. Even when treatment needs go beyond what Medicaid covers, Kids Smiles bridges the gap, thanks to generous support from grants and donations. Donations also cover uninsured people.

Preventative visits typically have a short 3–4 week wait, but emergency dental visits are always seen without delay. Through its equity-focused approach, Kids Smiles was awarded NCQA Health Equity Accreditation and offers language services to serve patients in any language. They track race and ethnicity data to ensure equitable outcomes across all populations.

Deep Community Engagement

Kids Smiles is more than a clinic—it’s a community partner. Their outreach team is active in schools, daycares, and at community events, providing free dental screenings and oral health education. A partnership with the Upper Darby School District brings preventative care and education directly to students.

If your organization is hosting a community event, Kids Smiles welcomes opportunities to join and share resources with families. Their team is available to provide screenings, educational programming, and connections to dental providers for follow-up care.

Early Dental Visits = Lifelong Health

Kids Smiles encourages parents and caregivers to schedule a child’s first dental visit by their first tooth or first birthday. The earlier children establish dental care, the better their long-term health outcomes.
