When Ellen first learned about The Foundation for Delaware County, she was searching for a philanthropic partner. She recalls seeing posts shared by friends on social media and recognizing the Foundation as a trusted community institution.
Ellen had recently experienced a major life change. Following her mother’s passing, she received an inheritance—more money than she felt she needed herself. While she was deeply grateful to her parents, the responsibility that came with that gift felt overwhelming.
“There are so many worthy causes,” Ellen shared. “I didn’t know where to begin or how to choose. I knew I wanted to give back, but I needed guidance.”
Philanthropy had always been important to Ellen, but this was the first time she had the opportunity to give in a significant way. She also recognized her own privilege and felt a strong sense of responsibility to use her resources to help ease the way for others.
After speaking with her financial advisor, Ellen decided to meet with the Foundation to explore her options. That conversation proved to be a turning point.
“I was immediately impressed by how knowledgeable the staff were about Delaware County and the nonprofits serving our community,” she said. “They clearly do their due diligence. I felt confident that they were thoughtful, careful, and deeply invested in making a real impact.”
Ellen ultimately chose to establish a donor-advised fund, which allowed her to receive tax benefits, avoid capital gains taxes, and—most importantly—take the time she needed to thoughtfully shape her long-term giving plan.
“I love the flexibility of a DAF,” she explained. “I’m still working out my main funding priorities, but the funds are set aside for philanthropy. I know they’ll be used for good, and the Foundation will help me figure out where they can do the most good.”
For Ellen, one of the most valuable aspects of working with the Foundation is having a trusted partner to help navigate choices.
“I know that if the Foundation recommends an organization, it’s been vetted,” she said. “I don’t have to do all the research myself. I did my due diligence on the Foundation, and now I rely on them as my guides.”
With support from Foundation staff, Ellen has explored a range of causes and organizations, including site visits arranged to learn more about nonprofits firsthand. Afterward, she and the team talk through what resonated and where she wants to focus her support.
“It truly feels like a partnership,” Ellen said. “Having an informed, caring sounding board makes all the difference.”
She also appreciates the option to give to broader funding areas—such as animal welfare—rather than only to specific organizations, and the ability to be as hands-on or hands-off as she chooses.
When urgent needs arise, that flexibility matters even more. Because her DAF was already established, Ellen was able to quickly support the Foundation’s Rapid Response Fund during times of crisis.
“That ease really stood out to me,” she said. “When something urgent happens, you can respond immediately.”
Looking ahead, Ellen finds comfort in knowing that her fund will continue to support the causes she cares about beyond her lifetime.
For others who may feel unsure about where to start with philanthropy, her advice is simple:
“Just set up a meeting with someone from the Foundation. They’re incredibly knowledgeable, caring, and accessible. They’ll help you focus, understand your options, and align your giving with your values. Working with the Foundation has opened my eyes to how much need there is right here in our own backyard—and how impactful thoughtful, local giving can be.”
